Fads are forever

Remember when you were a kid and there was always a jug of 2% Milk in your fridge? And then suddenly you’re 17 and you wouldn’t be caught dead drinking it because Almond Breeze was the lead performer. But several years later, Oat Milk is headlining and Almond Milk becomes a has-been. Then Oat Milk gets exposed for being shady, some people say, “f-it, I don’t care” – the other half claim they never drank it because, “they knew” (yeah sure). Do you see where I’m going with this?

This is the cycle of everything we do & consume.

Someone tells us something is crème de la crème – we ask zero questions because we are blinded by the opinions of the masses. Then, some Karen who loves to debunk things OR some level-headed human who is willing to ask the right questions – confronts, the truth.

Years before social media took reign, these gear shifts between “what’s in” & “what’s out” moved at a slower pace. Now, I’d be shocked to learn that there are 3 products or practices that you’ve lived by for over a decade that you, yourself, haven’t disowned because of what the internet has to say. If you do, I commend you and I ask that you share those with me immediately – I want receipts.

Below are a list of fads I have bought into and sold off, anddd bought back, over time.
*Please use a condescending and annoying tone in your monologue as you read these to yourself*

  • “I love Whole Milk > dairy is terrible for you #dairyfree > almond milk latte > oat milk latte> dairy alternatives have a ton of gums and breed inflammation > dairy is back > omg I’m not lactose intolerant > whole milk matcha latte please”
  • “Yes! Vitamin D > so good for you > stay out of the sun or you’ll get cancer > just use sunscreen > wait not that sunscreen – mineral sunscreen, nope not mineral – has to be from Europe to work > are you taking a vitamin D supplement? oh honey, it’s called seasonal depression > just try and get some sun”
  • “Yum, Breakfast > the most important meal of the day! > omg you eat bf? idr the last time I ate before 3pm > I love having an espresso on an empty stomach and breaking fast with an almond > your cortisol is spiking, you need protein > eating protein for breakfast promotes regular insulin levels”
  • “Stay Active > I was on the elliptical for an hour with my sweat band > that’s not enough > indoor cycling is the it-workout > not too much or you’ll become infertile > Barry’s bootcamp! > high-intensity! > why am I waking up at 5am and not losing weight? > Cycle syncing > stop working out like a man > 10/3/30 on the treadmill > pilates > pilates is not lagree”
  • “Hydrate > drink water or gatorade > sports drinks have excess sugar > try sugar free > I still feel dehydrated > sugar-free just means artificial sweetener > stick to water > nope nvm you need electrolyte powders > LMNT has all the electrolytes you need > trash that, its overpriced minerals > natural mineral water is just water, lemon, and sea salt”

I’m exhausted.

In the same breath I can admit that this is us learning through the course of evolution. But where does the buck stop at determining what is good or bad, in or out, for the collective?

It won’t, this will never stop. And we need to identify it head on. What is good for me, may be terrible for my neighbor, and that is okay. And no, I’m not talking about a quarter pounder vs a chopped salad – don’t be a pest.

Marketing will forever exist and it will take a larger role in our lives the more we feed it. Companies need to either develop or stay relevant, and often times that means they need to kick some old-timer off the shelf.

But if you love that old-timer, and it treats you right – keep it.

Happier you’re here,

Kenny
